The “monster” Theron plays in Jason Reitman’s “Young Adult” is of an entirely different breed. The character here is a depressed, loathsome young adult fiction writer and self-proclaimed alcoholic — a beautiful, seemingly successful author whose life begins on a downward spiral. It would be easy to discredit Theron for the work she does in this film, her porcelain beauty in tact. But Theron, fearlessly and without vanity, does something in “Young Adult” that equals the impact of her iconic performance in “Monster” — she finds the ugly behind the beauty. And her willingness to confront the dark depths of the character’s desperation proves a devastating and sometimes very funny ride. Theron is the real deal and so is “Young Adult.”
