Dickens’s Bildungsroman about an upwardly mobile young man blinkered by snobbery is not exactly an adventurous choice of source material; there has been at least one adaptation every 10 years or so since television began, the last being a 1999 production featuring Charlotte Rampling as Miss Havisham, following hot on the heels of Alfonso Cuarón’s updated movie version.
