Sam Claflin is a name you should familiarise yourself with. A mere two years into his career, he is about to move from the sidelines into the big time. After stealing the show in the fourth Pirates Of The Caribbean, he was handpicked to be Kristen Stewart’s Prince Charming in the upcoming Snow White And The Huntsman, promising Pattinsonian levels of fame. First, though, the 25-year-old hits screens this spring as political firebrand Jack in the BBC’s White Heat, a multi-generational epic that prompts comparisons to Our Friends In The North. And given that launched the career of some guy named Daniel Craig, that can only be a good thing…
That was one of the best things about it — living through each period, getting to wear all the gear and listening to the music. The music was inspirational, actually. I downloaded all of the tracks in the script and made myself a soundtrack, and before filming every day I’d listen to a particular song from that era to get into the mood. The costumes were incredible, all these antique pieces we had to play with. It was all real, there wasn’t any acting involved. I tried to treat everything as normal, rather than looking at it and going, “That’s so cool — a camera the size of my head.”
What was your favourite period in the show?
I love the Sixties stuff in general — probably because that’s when Jack [his White Heatcharacter] is the most cool. He kind of loses his touch a bit as he gets a bit older.
